I've read The Perfect Mother twice and my heart was still pounding during the final pages the second time around. This book is smart, funny, and brings up so many topical issues for discussion. I've read many mysteries and still couldn't figure out this one until the end. The prose is fresh and easy to follow. I loved this book! I know some people will be turned off by the Mommy talk throughout the book, but as a fairly new mom, I loved the mix of the mom talk with the suspense. I got the book over the weekend and finished it in two days. The only reason it took me two days to read it? I have a full-time job, a two-year-old, and my husband was away for work so I was the only one home taking care of my daughter. I will highly recommend this to all my friends who need good reads over the summer. I may even read it again myself! Good reading everyone!
I wanted to like this book because of all the hype about it. But, it was a confusing plotline with too many characters plus husbands names and other relatives. I got lost. I had no idea who was narrating each time and that was annoying. Sometimes there was something interesting happening but then it would get boring. I still have no idea what the ending meant. I am not interested in rereading the book. I will not go see the movie either. Disappointed.
Just finished this novel. Although I enjoyed reading some of the character’s thoughts/feelings around new motherhood, I am disappointed with the book as a whole. The characters are hard to keep straight, and the ending was totally confusing and feels thrown in out of the blue. It is hard to put in all the reading time to be left so baffled. Too much going on, without enough character differentiation.
It took me a few chapters to settle into this book. At first it was kind of aloof to me - everything in third person, bouncing between different people’s perspectives, and providing a bunch of women’s names I was having a hard time remembering. But once the ladies go out to the bar, the story picks up. The author did a great job of painting the scene; the fact that there were multiple perspectives and back stories helped to build the mystery and confusion about the turn of events. In fact, after the third chapter I glanced back at the highlights of chapters one and two, and that helped cement the starts of the storyline.
There were times when the reading would get laborious for me because there’s 4 different women that are featured, and each woman usually has either her own chapter or chunks of a chapter that are from her viewpoint. This means that several chapters were left on semi cliff-hanger moments with new revelations about respective characters. The problem with that for me was that not every character had the same level of interesting things going on. So some of the chapters felt kind of boring while I was trying to get back to where another character left off.
The book definitely has a twist. However, now that I’m finished with the book, I don’t really know how I feel about it. The author brushes over the main characters’ back stories - so I kind of felt connected to them, but then also not really. The epilogue felt like it kind of happened in shadow. You have an idea of where things stand, but it felt like it finished it the middle of a thought.
What started as a rather average book about a group of women gathering in the park to share pregnancy, motherhood and the juggling act required to maintain their sanity while trying to be the mother they imagined they each imagined they would be., quickly became a story about a tragedy that changed all of their lives
Plan on reading it in one sitting! I loved this book and can't wait to read Aimee Molloy's next novel.
A night out. A few hours of fun. That’s all it was meant to be.
They call themselves the May Mothers—a group of new moms whose babies were born in the same month. Twice a week, they get together in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for some much-needed adult time.
When the women go out for drinks at the hip neighborhood bar, they want a fun break from their daily routine. But on this hot Fourth of July night, something goes terrifyingly wrong one of the babies is taken from his crib. Winnie, a single mom, was reluctant to leave six-week-old Midas with a babysitter, but her fellow May Mothers insisted everything would be fine. Now he is missing. What follows is a heart-pounding race to find Midas, during which secrets are exposed, marriages are tested, and friendships are destroyed.
My Thoughts The Perfect Mother A Novel is narrated by multiple characters, and begins in the first person voice of one of them. She seems to be anonymous, and throughout the story, I thought I knew who she was. But only in the final moments is her identity known.
To say that first-time mothers are often insecure, not knowing the right way to do the various tasks connected to being the “perfect” mother, would be an understatement. Finding the May Mothers group seemed a great way to form their own community to support them and enhance their knowledge.
What each of them brings to the group is her best face, hiding the various secrets in the past.
So when baby Midas goes missing after the mothers take a night out at a local bar, it is only a matter of time until these secrets begin to surface.
Winnie has a glamorous past, so hiding her background makes her seem standoffish…until the truth comes out. But then the media makes so much of it all, turning her into someone who might do something terrible, like hurt her own baby.
The others have faith in her, not believing that she could harm her baby, and they all offer their thoughts to the police when interviewed. Some of them, like Francie, go above and beyond to persuade the police to look elsewhere…until they brush her aside, annoyed with her behavior.
Numerous possibilities are considered, and while the search continues, the other mothers deal with their own lives and their challenges. Francie is struggling from sleep deprivation and also from her obsessive need to help with the search. Collette is ghost-writing a book for the mayor, but finds that he is often unavailable for meetings, so her work is less than stellar. Nell seems to have a lot more to hide, and as her secrets come out, the media attention flickers from Winnie and Midas to her.
I was totally blindsided by what had actually happened, and who was behind everything. As I rapidly turned the pages, I felt breathless from the intensity of it all. A page turner! 5 stars.
