Her choice will decide who will be king, Aurelian or his brother.When Evvie decides to go on a date with a handsome stranger, she has no idea the adventure it will take her on. Sick with fever she unlocks a secret door to the Winter Court with the skeleton key. Once there, she finds herself in the middle of a rivalry between brothers. One brother who desires her heart, the other, her blood.
Normally drawn to a more self-sufficient female character than Evvie, I was surprised by how much I was rooting for her. Watching her struggle to decipher dream from reality made her a more interesting character and kept me interested.
I was more drawn to Auri’s character. The way the claim slowly took him was interesting to watch. His struggle made him very believable.
Army of the Winter Court is Ali Winter’s best book yet. Its surreal quality made me feel like I was in a dream for most of the book. The world she created is hauntingly beautiful with vivid descriptions that drew me in.

Ali is a brilliant world creator. I can’t wait to see where she takes us next.

Evvie is now at college with her friend and roommate, Silvia. When she meets the mysterious Ian, she instantly feels a connection. After their date, she falls very ill and find a skeleton key with a mysterious note. After she realizes how to use the key, she finds herself in a realm beyond anything she could imagine. She meets Ian, later known as Auri in this strange realm and learns that not only are the fae real, but they aren't the cute, winged creatures of fairy tales. Everyone is only giving her half-truths, but one thing is for certain... She has to choose between two brothers to be king... One wants her heart and the other wants her blood. Who will she choose? Why her? Is this all just a dream?
This is a GREAT book!! The twists and turns are awesome and the characters are very developed. The ending was very unexpected and the key definitely made this whole adventure of a book possible. I'm very excited to read more books from the Skeleton Key Series. This is a book for all ages and I would definitely recommend this book... I take that back, I recommend reading every book by Ali Winters. I love you, Ali! )
Army of the Winter Court by Ali Winters is part of the Skeleton Key book series. I really love the set up of this series. It is a group of almost 30 authors, each one writing a book featuring a skeleton key that unlocks a secret world. But all of the books are vastly different. Different themes, different age groups and different sub genres. I just love that idea. So whether you like young adult, new adult or adult, you will be able to find a book for you. Army of the Winter Court started out a bit different than the previous books that I have read from the Skeleton Key series. Instead of starting out in our world and having the main character discover the key right away, Army of the Winter Court starts out in the Fae kingdom with the two fae courts fighting. It is here that we also learn of a prophecy. And I do love a good prophecy story! The prophecy states that whichever side can find and convince the hafling to join their side, will be the victorious side, and will win the seat of the king. This is immediately a concept that drew me in, and I hadn’t even met the skeleton key holder yet!
Army of the Winter Court pits two guys, brothers no less, against each other for the halfling’s allegiance and affection. I ate the whole thing up. Army of the Winter Court felt like a dark fairy tale, which I guess if you think about it it technically is. I really enjoyed this one from start to finish. I do wish it was a little bit longer because the whole vibe of this story really spoke to me. It was dark and creepy and the twisted romance was just what I was craving. There is a bit of triangle just because of the nature of the prophecy and story, but if you are a fan of darker fantasy this is a great one for you to check out from the series.
And yes, I know all of you want me to pick a side. Which of the brothers did I like more? Aurelian or Nolan. Yes. That is my answer. I’m not sure I even know the answer to that question. They both appealed to me for different, sometimes dark reasons. Plus, I am not going to ruin a thing. (but also, I am confused as to my answer. haha)
A Note about the series Because I have gotten this question from a few different people, I wanted to point out that the books are not connected at all in the Skeleton Key series. They all feature different characters, different worlds and sometimes even different genres. The common element linking all the books together, is that in each one, the main characters finds a skeleton key that unlocks the door to a different world.

This story was not at all what I expected. It was better. Two brothers put against each other for one woman. The scheme set in motion by their little sister. Let the games begin, winner takes all or do they. Very surprising ending. I loved the story and would recommend it to anyone who loves a great story plot, and of course the Fae. Ali Winters out did herself on this one.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a through the looking glass kind of feel to it. I enjoyed the world that is introduced to us and there is an interesting twist near the end! It is a good read and I definitely recommend it.
