Hounded Iron Druid Chronicles Kevin Hearne Books
The adventures of Atticus and his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon are entertaining and fast paced reading. This is a good start to a new series about Atticus a several thousand year old Druid, and how he stays looking like a 23 year old college student. To try to avoid some bad guy God's, Atticus lives in Arizona, but is found and used as a pawn by several gods that have him in mortal danger several times in this book to achieve their ultimate goals, not caring about the end results for Atticus. Atticus isn't thrilled to find out just about every one of his old acquaintances has used him some way or another, but he holds to his word, and we meet several characters that I hope to see in future stories, be they werewolves, vampires or old Irish widows. Enjoyable fast read, once it gets going hard to stop until the end.Tags : Amazon.com: Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles) (9780345522474): Kevin Hearne: Books,Kevin Hearne,Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles),Del Rey,0345522478,Fantasy - Contemporary,Fantasy - Paranormal,Druids and Druidism,Druids and druidism;Fiction.,Fantasy fiction,Fantasy fiction.,Magic,AMERICAN FIRST NOVELISTS,AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,Arizona,FICTION Action & Adventure,FICTION Fantasy Contemporary,FICTION Fantasy General,FICTION Fantasy Paranormal,Fantasy,Fantasy - General,Fiction,Fiction - Fantasy,Fiction-Fantasy,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Monograph Series, 1st,SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,United States, fantasy; urban fantasy; druids; magic; werewolves; vampires; paranormal; witches; mythology; celtic; iron druid chronicles; gods; arizona; supernatural; iron druid; humor; druid; urban; adult; contemporary; celtic mythology; shapeshifters; dogs; irish; fairies; swords; science fiction; funny; adventure; contemporary fantasy; world building; faerie; fantasy books; science fiction and fantasy; fantasy science fiction; sci-fi fantasy; fantasy fiction; sf fantasy; sff; fantasy adventure; adventure fantasy; science fiction fantasy; phantasy, fantasy;urban fantasy;druids;magic;werewolves;vampires;paranormal;mythology;witches;celtic;iron druid chronicles;gods;arizona;iron druid;supernatural;druid;humor;adult;urban;contemporary;shapeshifters;celtic mythology;dogs;irish;fairies;world building;contemporary fantasy;swords;science fiction;funny;faerie;adventure;fantasy books;science fiction and fantasy;fantasy science fiction;sci-fi fantasy;fantasy fiction;sf fantasy;sff;fantasy adventure;adventure fantasy;science fiction fantasy;phantasy,FICTION Action & Adventure,FICTION Fantasy Contemporary,FICTION Fantasy General,FICTION Fantasy Paranormal,Fantasy - General,Fiction - Fantasy,American Science Fiction And Fantasy,Science Fiction And Fantasy,Fiction,Fantasy
Hounded Iron Druid Chronicles Kevin Hearne Books Reviews
A new series with a druid for me. I've been reading M.D. Massey's Junkyard Druid series for the past year and I found this first book in the Iron Druid series to be delightfully different. Both series are about druids, the Tuatha de Dannan, and many magical creatures, the two tell their tales quite and superbly in their own rights.
I found Atticus to be a well written character and we'll worth exploring corner in this series. I love his companion Oberron and her adds refreshing comedic at times.
The story is well written and develops on such a way that three reader in the fall as much add Atticus. Well worth the read, and I now looking forward too the rest of this series.
Atticus O'Sullivan - as he is currently known - is a peaceful man. He is a traditional Druid who grew up through the centuries and enjoys modern American culture for its distinct ignorance of historical knowledge. Atticus currently lives in Arizona - where there is a comfortable lack of gods and fae - with his Irish wolfhound Oberon. He spends his days running his occult book and tea shop, taking care of his neighbor's yard, playing with Oberon, and guarding his magical sword, Fragarach. Unfortunately, a Celtic god is disputing ownership of that sword, and so Atticus's carefully cultivated peace is not so quiet anymore.
This is a light romp through urban fantasy, with the typical spiraling violence up to the final fight scene. While the world-building is reasonable, the magic is nearly elemental and only mentioned rather than explained. This world has all the magical types, too, from gods of all kinds to witches to vampires to werewolves. I have to admit, though, that the aspect of the book that hooked me was the sarcasm from Atticus on the one hand and the innocent humor of the dog on the other.
I enjoyed the cast of characters and the various points of view that they bring to Atticus. Among the characters that I enjoyed seeing flash by are a vampire lawyer with a team of ghouls on retainer, a pleasantly tipsy old Irish lady who doesn't mind killings so long as they are Brits, a goddess of the hunt who is recently addicted to smoothies, and a book store employee who takes everything at face value - including Morrigan's multiple visits.
I picked this book up because I enjoyed Hearne's short story about Atticus in CarniPunk. I like the dog/humor element a great deal. I recommend it to fans of early Dresden for the great cast of secondary characters.
I really enjoyed this book, and went on to buy the second. It was recommended to me by a follower on Twitter. There were really only two things I found less than par, and both are very subjective, so they don't affect my rating. First, I found the comedic relief between the MC and his dog to be pretty cheesy and leaned on too hard. I found the vampire funnier, and I didn't get the impression the vampire was supposed to be all that funny. I suppose the dog conversations fall pretty far into typical 'guy humor,' which isn't my taste, but obviously plenty of people love it or it wouldn't be so popular. Second nitpick, all the names and different mythological characters were really hard for me to keep track of. I will freely admit that most of my familiarity with mythology if from Greek and Roman mythology, so if you are more familiar with Irish and other mythologies, that probably won't be too big a deal for you. The main characters were well fleshed out and entertaining, the flirting and sexual tension was perfect, the plot was engaging, the world building was well developed (a MAJOR pet peeve of mine), and the writing was pretty good. Definitely recommended!
I read a lot. In the past, sometimes 50-75 books each year. If I don’t like a book I will stop reading it; life is to short to make yourself miserable.
The good books, the ones that years later you are still talking about them, are few and far between. “Good Omens”, “The Return of the King”, “To Green Angel Tower” and the like are all novels that I sat down to read ... and didn’t get up until I finished the book. (Tad Williams nearly killed me from lack of sleep)
“Hounded” is one of those books. It lays forth a tapestry of characters and events without reading like a history book. The characters are fully formed, even the peripheral ones, so when they show up again they feel like a friend.
The characters change. They grow. They falter. Sometimes, as in reality, they die and you mourn them, you miss them.
The only complaint I have (and it is such a petty one) is that the cover doesn’t match the character painted inside. See? I told you it was petty.
