I thought it was a lovely, whimsical story about finding yourself, not giving up, and despite adversity ... maintaining hope. Woven in were the importance of family and friendship ... and a gentle love story to round it off. As with many other readers, I'm sure, it's got me dreaming about walking (part of) the Camino or, at least, exploring the possibility of doing so. There's such warmth and humour to the story that it evolves to become an uplifting and quietly inspirational read.Tags : Two Steps Forward: A Novel [Graeme Simsion, Anne Buist] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Great read and the characters were very enjoyable.
Gearing up to take on the Camino as I write -)
I couldn't put it down. Charming characters and a wonderful setting . I feel as if I had walked the Camino myself .
Rosie stories were so appealing it was reasonable to assume this "travelogue" of a favorite spot in the world was going to be fun to read. The Camino in Spain offers history, a wonderful walking experience and 1000 years of others taking these steps. The rolling backpack was a total innovation added to the plot. You might think of it as the protagonist as all os us were emotionally involved in the success of completing the journey. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the story was the versions of his and hers experiences along the way. We all view things differently and this made the adventure twice as nice.
This is my third exposure to The Walk. Saw the movie with Martin Sheen. And read Step by Step by Lawrence Block, who did the Walk a few years earlier (2007). I liked the switch between Zoe and Martin. I also liked reading about older protagonists circling around romantic entanglements.
Enjoyed the book because of the familiarity with the Camino even tho not Camino Frances. But found the love story a bit hammy. Day to day read quite well with him her showing different approaches to the camino - detailed planning vs no cash, massages and cartoons.
Quirky, poignant, fabulous descriptions of the Camino trial in France and Spain.I would love to do that 1500 km walk Characters are believable and the on off on love story has an unexpected ending. A really good read
I read The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect, both of which I really enjoyed. This latest, although good, just lacked some of the fun of the other two. Zoe and Martin are both likeable characters who for different reasons, decide to take on the Chemin. As in all journey stories, they meet people and share their stories along the way to Santiago de Compostela. Each finds what they were searching for, although it wasn't exactly what they thought it would be. Now as a romance, I appreciate that the characters are mature and not the stereotypical thirty-something confirmed bachelor/bachelorette, physically gorgeous and more interested in their careers, blah, blah, blah, but I felt that I wasn't rooting for any of them in particular. The Chemin itself was the star of the show. It reads a bit like a travelogue, and as such it certainly sparked my curiosity and interest to look into the walk, but the story itself could certainly use a little more of the quirky humor from the Rosie books.
