Danger at the Drawbridge Mildred A Wirt Books

If I had the option to give this book four and a half stars, I think that would be the more appropriate rating for it. As, in this mystery series, the difference between Penny's flippant nature and the more benevolent Nancy Drew nature that was created by both Mildred Wirt Benson and the daughter of the Stratemeyer syndicate, really manifests itself. However, that being said, I still found myself engrossed in the mystery. In this book, we have the wealthy Kippenberg family hosting a society wedding, to which Penny is assigned to cover as an undercover reporter for her Father's newspaper. Through some instances that I won't divulge here, lest I spoil the plot, the wedding doesn't take place as planned. In the process, Penny gets locked into a below the ground vault and inside a ship's cabin and she experiences all kinds of other hair raising adventures. Thankfully, everything turns out well and of course "The Riverview Star" gets the scoop!

Danger at the Drawbridge Mildred A Wirt Books Reviews

Take a millionaire who has disappeared, his publicity-shy dragon of a wife and a runaway groom, and you've got the makings of an exceptional mystery.

Young Penny Parker, growing into her rôle as a sometime cub reporter for her dad's newspaper the Riverview Star, heads to the nuptials of Sylvia Kippenberg, the wedding of the year. Her father, the ostentatious drugstore magnate Clayton Kippenberg (yes, alliteration is big in a Mildred A. Wirt novel) built a literal castle for his family, complete with moat and drawbridge. Talk about conspicuous consumption! Thorstein Veblen would be proud!

Rumors hold that Mr. Kippenberg has disappeared due to pending federal tax-evasion charges. Penny's dad, editor Anthony Parker, thinks that Mr. Kippenberg will feel compelled to attend his daughter's big day, and he sends Penny to cover the wedding.

Both Parkers get a bigger scoop than they expected Groom Grant Atherwald, immediately after arriving at the castle, gets a written message and then takes off. The wedding has to be called off.

What spooked Grant? Where has Clayton Kippenberg gone? Are the two matters related? What other secrets are the Kippenbergs hiding? Wirt is better known for the early Nancy Drew novels she penned under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene; however, fans of girl-detective fiction will find that plucky, sassy Penny Parker provides a better read than the cool, icy Nancy Drew any day.

One quibble though Mr. Kippenberg's first name is variously identified as Clayton and James in the bundle I bought. You'd think someone would have proofed the novella before including it in the multi-pack, The Penny Parker Megapack 15 Complete Novels. Ironically, the stand-alone free editions of each of the Penny Parker novels have fewer errors than the multi-pack that you have to pay for. Go figure!

These books make for Sweet Dreams! I loved this Drawbridge mystery. Fast-paced. Exciting.

So well written. I'm off to buy the next Penny Parker Mystery in the series.
My family (boys 7 and 9) and I really enjoy the "Penny Parker" books by Mildred Wirt. Similar to the "Nancy Drew" mysteries, each story has young Penny Parker solving a mystery and helping her father get the newspaper "scoop" at the same time. Written in the 1940s, the books are wholesome (even the bad guys don't use profane language) and offer a glimpse into a society from an earlier period in history. There are 17 books in the series; Danger at the Drawbridge is book #3.
Penny Parker is an interesting young adult. Young girls will find her delightful, persistent, and intelligent. The story has an intriguing plot.
Basically, this is a Nancy Drew mystery with the main character (Penny Parker) being a newpaper reporter (or wannabe reporter as she's still in high school) instead of a detective! Mildred A. Wirt was one of the authors of the syndicated Nancy Drew mysteries and (apparently) decided to branch out on her own with several other series. You can get all the Penny Parker books (around 17 I believe. I don't remember exactly how many off-hand) for free from for the . I picked them up for that reason!

They are quite predicatable books. I have enjoyed them for the most part. This is one of my favorite books of the series so far, still below the Rick Brant stories (in my opinion) however. They spend a lot of time during the stories talking about the previous stories! In this one (published originally in 1940), Penny has to crash a wedding to get a story. She discovers all is not as it seems and comes back several times before she figures out the whole truth about what's going on.

The action stays pretty steady in this book and the mystery is fairly interesting. I liked Penny pretty well in this story (sometimes I find her fairly annoying!). If you want to ready some stories that are like Nancy Drew with them all being available free, I do recommend these stores about Penny Parker by Mildred A. Wirt!
